Racing was to start Saturday at 1 pm. The skies were blue and the temperature a pleasant 76° F, but the wind failed to arrive for two hours. When it did arrive; zap, it came in at 12-16 mph and blew steady the remainder of the race day. Brian Tyrrell and Laura Bolin took top honors that day winning all four races. The Vancouver Lake Sailing Club hosted a wonderful dinner, promply serving everyone 45 minutes after the boats had landed. Two additional races were held on Sunday, with lighter winds (4-7 mph) that diminished. Brian Tyrrell and Laura Bolin continued their winning ways, even winning the race to the boat ramp at the end of the day. Thank you to the Vancouver Lake Sailing Club -- everything was done right: excellent organization, perfect weather, sharp race committee, little down time between races, delicious food, and perfect camping. The club is already talking about returning next year. Complete race results can be found at the regatta website.

Six Flying Scots from the Columbia Basin Sailing Club competed in the 2011 Al Morris Regatta at Yale Lake, Cougar, WA on August 6th and 7th, with the class being completed with an additional Scot from the Seattle Fleet, sailed by Doug and Amy Farnham. Moderate and steady winds allowed the race committee, hosted by the Willamette Sailing Club, to hold five races on Saturday and three more on Sunday. The Scots were fourth in the starting order of six classes: 1) A-Cat, 2) Thistle, 3) Tasar, 4) Flying Scot, 5) Lido, and 6) open. Saturday's race courses were single loops around the windward and leeward marks, and Sunday's races included two triangular courses with spinnaker reaching marks. The efficient race starts, good camp sites, steady winds, mountain-lake scenery, and fun local pubs has made this regatta a favorite among the club members. Thank you to the Willamette Sailing Club for hosting the regatta -- the Columbia Basin Sailing Club is certain to be back next year to race at this event. Complete race results can be found at the regatta website.

Light winds (4-7 mph) prevailed all weekend, but the winds were consistent enough to keep the boats moving for all races. The Flying Scot fleet was very competitive as shown by the scoring (only six points separated the first 5 competitors after 7 races). Any small change in sailing in the light winds could have rearranged several of the placings.
Notable at this event: 1) capable 13 yr old crew Lindsey Bolin, 2) impressive single-handed sailing by Brian Tyrrell, 3) string of 1st place bullets by Bob Spaulding, 4) new club member Dave Polehn's finish in his Hobie 16, 5) Laura Bolin assisting on Race Committee, 6) Maureen Obst's oatmeal cookies, and 7) Russ Jones (RC Chairman) entertaining technique for shouting down jet skis & other power boats in the sailing area. Overall this was a good event for the combined racing of Flying Scot Fleets 100 & 186, great camping and mountain/lake scenery as usual. As promised, the water was a crystalline 72° F, and quite refreshing at the end of each day. Thank you to the Lake Chelan Sailing Association for hosting the regatta -- the Columbia Basin Sailing Club is certain to be back next year to race at this event. Complete race results can be found at the regatta website.
