Saturday racers were greeted with sunny skies and very light winds. The Skipper’s Meeting took place at 10 AM. Equipped with the latest forecast the Race Committee announced their general plan to go ahead until the wind dies or we all get hungry. The light conditions allowed boats to bunch up at the turning marks making rounding an added challenge. The RC was able to complete two races in the light conditions before calling off competition for the day. The Saturday night barbeque included live music and was hosted by Russ and Debby Jones. The food, music, and socializing was a welcome break from the first day on the water. Sunday, again a sunny day, provided more favorable winds. The steady 10 knot breeze allowed for the completion of four races. The day produced exciting finishes. One race had two boats finishing less than one second apart. Ray Peters won 1st Place in the Flying Scot fleet. Bob Spaulding won 1st Place in the PHRF class with an impressive six straight bullet finishes.

The Flying Scot class was led by Ray Peters and Truda Peters sailing Breezin with an impressive string of first place finishes. Idler sailed by Rich Obst and Kevin Minton placed second. Competition was exciting right from the busy starting line approaches and later as boats came together at turning marks even after major separations on the approach leg. On several occasions boats were within a foot of each other at the turning marks. Finishes also brought excitement as boats approached and crossed the line with inches deciding places. Consensus is that this event was well worth the drive to Cougar. The Willamette SC Race Committee did a great job setting up and running 9 efficient and rapid fire races in two days. The location was scenic, and camping comfortable with parking, showers, beach, and launch within easy reach. Cougar Camp provides secure camping, grounds are well kept, the location is set in the woods just far enough off the main road to be private and undisturbed.

Racing was on open water well outside the harbor. Winds Saturday were patchy at best, filling-in in some places and not in others. Seas were calm. The day was sunny and mostly comfortable. The Race Committee managed to get in 4 races Saturday. Sunday was a different story. After an all night light rain Saturday, Sunday morning started with plenty of wind. It was difficult to sense how strong the wind was at the dock behind the protection of the jetty and cluster of boats. After sailing out to the starting line and crashing around in the swell, racing was called off by the Race Commitee. Upon returning to the club we learned the wind was blowing 30 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Saturday racing became the final scoring for the regatta. Scoring was close with second and third places separated by only one point.
