On Saturday May 1st CBSC sailed the first official race of the 2021 season. And what a day it was! The sun was out and warm without being too hot. The wind stated out light at around 1.5 to 2.5mph in the morning, building after noon to 8 to 10, with a few gusts bumping up into the high teens. In the last race, watching the full spinnakers pull the boats up on a plane as they rocketed downwind to the finish was a sight for sore eyes.

There were 5 Flying Scots. Gerry Watt came out in the Montgomery, and Terry Filson joined in on his Santana 23 Silver Streak. Typical of Charbonneau, until the wind filled in it was a bit shifty. This led to a premium on calling the shifts, while a dose of good luck came in handy as well. There were many opportunities for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in equal amounts to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

No matter how one finished, based upon the smiles in the parking lot afterwards, it was evident that everyone had a great time. Race Committee: Jeff Bartlett

Spring race #2 opened on a bright and sunny day with cool temperatures and winds around 8 to 12mph. That would change as the day went on.

With 8 boats taking the start to sail a 1-4-F windward/leeward the second race of the season was underway. The sailing was close with only 7 minutes covering all finishing times.

The second race saw the winds piping up a bit with a few gusts into upper teens. To keep the race short and see what the wind was going to do, the fleet sailed a 1-F course, setting up a downwind finish. Down the run Brian and Scott duked it out for first, planning almost the whole way. Coming to the line with no visible lead, Brian surged ahead to nip Scott out for first by about 18”. As you could imagine the race was a short one. With only 5 minutes spanning first to last the race was over in just under 18 minutes.

Race three had good winds but still gusty as in the first two races. To mix things up a bit, the course was a 1-3-4-F, marks to starboard. The reach from 1 to 3 was close call between a jib reach and trying to carry a spinnaker with the pole to the headstay. Both strategies seemed to work equally well. Again the racing was close and competitive.

Race three was so much fun, the fleet sailed the same course for race number four. The fast reaching legs more than made up for the lack of a running leg. The race ran just over 30 minutes and had good close finishes.

As the RC was prepping for a fifth race the wind conditions were starting to approach abandonment time. The course was called for a quick 1-F. But before the starting sequence, looking down lake toward the Ice Harbor Dam, there were big, dark, and nasty looking winds building from the SW. The RC abandoned race, but just not in time. While the fleet was heading for the harbor, in came several walloping gusts.

One boat, hit by a big gust during the jibe for the harbor entrance, capsized. One sailor, who had already docked, hopped into the Whaler to effect a quick rescue of the crew, while another Scot picked up the skipper. The boat was towed into the harbor, on its side and righted. Back on the trailer with the only damage being a lost Windex. This loss was compensated for by the mussels stuck in the masthead.

The crew from another boat was swept off the foredeck while trying to secure the jib. He was picked up in a few minutes by his boat and they made safe harbor without further incident. No one suffered more than being wet, cold, and embarrassed for a while. There was no damage beyond a lost Windex, however many valuable lessons in heavy weather sailing, MoB recovery, and capsize recovery were learned.

Afterwards we meet up at Kimo’s for a bit of post sailing “therapy”. Although, it was challenging day in many respects, it was a good sailing day. Race Committee: Jeff Bartlett

Saturday the 29th was a warm day with light and shifty winds in the morning. Mostly out of the west to north there was not much one could do to set a good course with a true windward leg. By midday, the wind was still shifting around a lot, but had piped up a bit, which made for good sailing.

Three boats took the six starts. We sailed windward/leeward courses, which in reality were mostly reach/reach courses. Sometime it was a close reach, sometimes it was a broad reach. Sometimes the spinnaker worked great, sometimes the spinnaker worked badly. It was a day where positions on the course and lucky wind breaks made all the difference. Sometimes the right side worked well, and in the next race it was the left side.

Despite or because of the fluky winds, each race was anyone’s to win or lose. Almost each race saw a different winner, and no more than a few minutes separated first from third. Each race saw close racing and a lot of position swapping. It was a challenging day to say the least, but was one of the best sailing days we have had all year. Race Committee: Jeff Bartlett
