The first race of the 2022 Spring series was sailed on Sunday May 14th. Saturday’s race had been postponed due winds in the 20s with gusts into the 30s. Wind on Sunday was an improvement, but still a bit on the fresh side. Sunday was Mother’s Day, so several boats could not make it due to other commitments.

Sunday proved to be a good sailing day. There were three races sailed in a good breeze. The conditions proved to be challenging, but well within the upper wind range for the Flying Scot. A fourth race was started, but was abandoned due to an approaching squall line.

All boats made it into the harbor with no more trouble than some wet foul weather and some wet sailors with a few sore limbs. There was one on course incident, which is an early nominee for the 2022 Rusty Spike.

Spring Race #2 is on the books as one fine day of sailing. The weather forecast predicted rain throughout the morning with gusty winds, into the 20 mph range. While the weather forecast was mostly right, it was about 12 hours early. After raining through the night, by 09:00 Saturday morning the weather was cool and cloudy, no rain, and winds around 8 to 12, with gusts into the upper-mid teens.

By noon it was partly sunny with good wind and no waves. Perfect Flying Scot weather!

With the Whaler in the shop, Scott, and Ken sailed the weather and leeward marks in place, while Doug set the start/finish line. Although a bit of a kludge, setting the marks this way worked out better than expected.

Ray Peters & Ralph Wilson ran four great races from the shore. Each race sailed a different course, under stable winds, with a few spritely gusts thrown in for good measure. The differing courses and puffy winds, meant no one side of the course or strategy was favored, placing a premium on sail set, boat handling, and playing the shifts.

The winds were building into the afternoon, so the race committee decided to get everyone safe and sound back into the harbor before things got too crazy; and they called it perfectly. The fourth race, ended the day, on a downwind blast with full spinnakers pulling the boats up on a plane into the finish. Sort of giving new meaning to “Wow, what a ride”!

See you at the Lake,
