The first race of the summer series was sailed under beautiful blue skies, and warming temperatures. Unlike last year’s sweltering 115° F heat dome, highs were in the high 80s. The wind was forecast to be out of the north to east northeast between 7 and 14 mph, which meant a reversal of the prevailing wind direction. A welcome change to scramble up the normal routine.
Well that almost happened. In the first race, with the wind out of the west southwest, blowing 2 to 5 mph, we sailed a short 1-Finish marks to port, just to get everyone sorted out. As the morning went on, the forecast winds had not got the memo and showed up late. As the wind held from the west southwest the speed picked up to a workable 4 to 8 mph. It was spotty and shifty, making the right-side work in the second race but not in the third race, where the left-side of the course was golden.
While these conditions shook the fleet up several times, it made for some great sailing and close finishes. In the first race there was only a few seconds separating the first three boats, with second and third being too close to call.
After the third race, Boreas finally showed up, however not exactly as predicted. As we were getting ready for the fourth race the wind started to clock around to the northwest and north, and picked up into the mid-teens with gusts approaching the low 20 mph. There were lots of flogging sails as the gusts rolled through. Opting for caution, and not wanting to recover a capsize with the water still being on the cold side, it was decided to appreciate the great sailing we’d had, and call it a day.
Ralph and Scott stayed out for some heavier air practice. The winds were unsettled, with sudden 35/40 degree wind shifts, and gusts that seem to come out of nowhere. The sailing was a blast, but demanding close attention.
